It explains everything through the game's narrator/radio dj, Atomica as you go. Just pay attention.
The icons on the map can be explained in the map screen (back button on the Xbox).
To exit an event, stop moving for 4 seconds.
Wrong turns suck indeed, but they allow you to take the train tracks to beat 2nd place to finish by 20-30 seconds. This is enough time to crash a few times.

I totally disagree with you on this review. It was a good movie that explained the characters and their roles in the assassination plot. The movie seemed to move very fast which you had to keep up with whats going on and whos doing what.

Aside from the nostalgia, it's just one of those satisfying games that will frustrate you until you get the timing down and feel like you're the most skilled gamers ever. And especially with Mega Man 9, getting to save my progress and easy load it without passwords, it's just something you can sit down, lay out a task for and accomplish in a relatively short period of time. If I'm getting in from work, and have to wait 30 minutes before dinner is cooked, I can say "I am going to beat Jewel Man" and just focus on that until I do it, and walk away. Same thing with something like Bionic Commando Rearmed. Playing a bigger game, like a GTA, WoW, or even an online FPS, puts me in a paralyzing situation where there are many ways to spend my time, often without achieving any real results in the game. I tried coming up with several metaphors to finish this, but they were all terrible, so I'm just gonna end it on that note.
