Game Reviews
November 16, 2007I want to talk about a couple things here. I’ve been away from my blog recently, sorry all none of you who bother to read this regularly… this is more to amuse/appease myself. I’ve been writing a lot more recently, still primarily about video games since it’s something I’m ridiculously passionate about. Focusing mostly on reviews I’ve began to notice that I have been following a very simple system that many gaming/review outlets/magazines follow. It’s a rubric that has a set structure and it’s hit me recently that writing in this manner is boring and unoriginal. Following an introduction is always “the gameplay is [blah blah, blah]!” then “oh the graphics are [bleh blub blub blah]!” followed by “the sound/audio is super!”.
I find myself following this because these outlets write almost exclusively in this form and if I’m ever to seek a job there at some point, I should probably follow their lead. If their lead, however, bores me to read and write, why should I bore my readers by having an intro and a bunch of summary’s with a couple negative points where appropriate. I’m going to try experimenting with writing reviews, so if you read any inconsistencies, I’m “finding myself”, so chill. I am just sick of this tired mechanical way that a lot of reviews are written and I want as little to do with it as possible for now. Re-reading my Warhawk review nearly made me vomit it was so boring. Anyway, that’s all about that.
Secondly, I’ve been reading a lot about numbers in reviews and my opinion on this is for a later date. Remind me. I’m too tired to go off on that right now.
Thirdly, forget what I was going to put here. I’m bagged. Remind me about writing reviews Objectively/Subjectively… because an objective review is non-existent.
